This week's newsletter comes from the Algarve. PGA teaching professional Mark Peddar and I are playing in the PGA Overseas Pro Am with club members Justin Hunt, Lee Davis, Malcolm Reardon and Peter Waters. 

We hope to report back with a good performance around Monte Rei, Larajal and Quinta South.


Last week I conducted my first official duty as Chairman of the PGA in England South at the awards dinner at the ballroom at Wentworth. 

This is a dinner held to celebrate the achievements of all of the 1456 PGA professionals in the south of England. 

It was a huge honour to present the awards especially as one was to our very own Sian Evans for Assistant of the year!


 

They're off to a flyer

Having celebrated the new Captains' first event last week I am delighted to let you know that the club raised over £13,000 last year for spadework. Well done to Dave Seely, Gill Olke and Brian Duffy on their efforts in supporting a great local cause.

How often do you drive to the course thinking about how your last game of golf went? You gather up all the negatives from your previous round - the lost balls, the three putts, the duffed bunker shot - which immediately puts you on the back foot before you've even teed off.

No matter how bad you've played in recent weeks, each round is different and there's no reason as to why your next won't see your handicap drop. Take Thorbjørn Olesen for example…

Having made just three of his last 12 cuts, the 26-year-old Dane produced some sublime golf en-route to winning the Turkish Airlines Open over the weekend. It's not the first time that Olesen has triumphed off the back of some horrid form; he also won the Alfred Dunhill Links last year following a run of 13 missed cuts in 18 events.

It just goes to show that the saying is true: form is temporary, class is permanent. If there's one lesson to be learnt from this then it's to start each round with renewed optimism and confidence that you're going to play well.
