Ladies golf is at the forefront of this week's newsletter with Sian flying the flag on the Professional level. We have hosted the Doxford Trophy for the Kent Ladies on Monday and have also been represented by Judy Ledley-Wood and Lady Captain Hilary Stephen at the PING final, too.
In addition, we are also now recruiting for a pilot ladies programme this month to start in October. Please click here to recommend a friend, partner, relative or any ladies you think might want to give golf a go.
I am writing this newsletter at the very end of the first day of the PGA Southern Professional Championships. Looking at the trophy on my desk I can see some extremely good players that have won the trophy in the past: Dai Rees, Bernard Hunt, Neil Coles OBE, Carl Mason, Max Faulkner, Peter Oosterhaus, Nick Job and in more recent times European Tour player Matt Ford. These names and more dating back to 1953 highlight the prestige of the event and our club is a fitting venue. Every single player today has spoken highly of the course, especially the greens. One thing that is missing from the list of names above is a female winner. Sian has finished three-under-par today which is at the time of writing two off the lead. I am sure you will all join me in wishing her all the best today (by time you read this).
Judy Ledley-Wood and Hilary Stephen had a wonderful experience taking part in the finals of the PING Ladies Fourball Betterball Finals at Gainsborough GC in Lincolnshire on Tuesday, 8 September. This is the 10th anniversary year of this national competition, with over 16,000 competitors taking part from 846 clubs. Judy and Hillary qualified back in June with a joint score of 44 stableford points, playing off three-quarter handicap - this proved to be the qualifying cut-off point for the finals, so the standard was going to be high.
Karsten Lakes is the more challenging of the two courses at Gainsborough having plentiful bunkers, ditches AND lakes. After a nervous start, the ladies settled down to do their best. They teed off at 9.20am in thick drizzle with two very nice partners from Easthampstead in Berkshire.
The weather gradually improved and after a round with both ups and downs, they finished with a creditable 34 points off three-quarter handicap. With the winning score being 43 and the lowest 20, Judy and Hilary were satisfied to finish in the middle of the field.
They were thoroughly spoilt by both PING and Gainsborough GC, with a delicious buffet lunch and some very generous gifts from PING and ECCO, and look forward to having another try next year.
